This festival has historical as well as natural importance. Many flowering plants and trees bloom at this time of year indicating the beginning of the Spring season.
On this day, God Brahma created time and the universe. On this same day, Shalivahan defeated the enemy and started the new ‘Shalivahan calendar’ in the 1st century.
People celebrated this victory by hoisting ‘Brahmadhwaj’. This Brahmdhwaj itself has been popularly known as Gudhi or Gudi.
